Palacio Magazine: Reimagining a Magazine (Replay)
Palacio Magazine is the rebirth of a bilingual magazine that informed and entertained Long Beach for five years, Palacio de Long Beach. Published by Andrea Sulsona, Palacio de Long Beach was the only city magazine that provided a voice for a growing Latino population. Unfortunately, Palacio de Long Beach ceased publication Spring 2014.
Many months of conversations over meals and coffee led to my decision to resurrect the magazine. To be honest, I didn’t rush easily into that decision. I was hesitant assuming such a responsibility. I knew that if we were going to do this, we would need to take advantage of the changing media landscape.
The rebranded Palacio Magazine is a multimedia digital and print platform featuring Latino stories in a multicultural Long Beach. Our goal is to engage these diverse voices to empower the exchange of creative ideas and transformative solutions. Palacio Magazine will be a platform for Latinos to share the stories of their lives, work, play, and communities.
This premiere print issue and the simultaneous launch of palaciomagazine.com is a return to my journalism and storytelling roots. My professional life of local and national advocacy and organizing, radio and television reporting and producing and my stubborn refusal to simply accept the status quo have brought me to this moment. I am proud and honored to join with my wife, Sumire Gant, as co-publisher to bring Palacio Magazine to Long Beach.
We are joined this month in this effort by Leadership Long Beach, a nonprofit that has, for more than 25 years, trained some of this city’s best and brightest leaders. Inside, you’ll find a 16-page insert for Idea Fest Long Beach (IF LB) 2015. IF LB is a day of celebration that will transform and inspire the Long Beach community through classes, music, art, food and fun. Presented by Leadership Long Beach, IDEA Fest is an annual event of Inspiration, Discussion, Education and Arts.
There are too many people to thank here but special shout outs to Mayor Robert Garcia for agreeing to be on the premiere cover and to all those who allowed us to share their stories in print and online. None of this would have been possible without the support of the content contributors, photographers, Leadership Long Beach, their alumni and the advertisers and sponsors. And a special thank you to Andrea Sulsona, former publisher of Palacio de Long Beach, who convinced me that I had to do this. I will work hard to carry on your legacy.
