Underwater Dreams: A Documentary
The ArtExchange and PalacioMagazine.com, in partnership with Ambulante California, will present an outdoor screening of the documentary, “Underwater Dreams”, on Saturday, October 10, 2015, 7-9pm as part of the Second Saturday Art Walk in Long Beach’s East Village. Additional partners include Building Healthy Communities Long Beach with funding from The California Endowment.
The film will be presented in the parking lot adjacent to the ArtExchange, southeast corner of Third Street and Long Beach Blvd. There will be a panel discussion following the film on the intersection of Creativity and Technology in today’s world. Additional programming includes Gallery visits at the ArtExchange 6-10pm.
Written and directed by Mary Mazzio and narrated by Michael Peña, the film chronicles the compelling and inspirational story of four teenage boys, the sons of Mexican immigrants, who entered a sophisticated underwater robotics competition, going up against the likes of engineering powerhouse MIT – and winning.
This rag-tag high school team of undocumented Mexican boys did what no one thought possible. The competition, however, was only the beginning. These boys forged a legacy that could not have been imagined.
Ambulante California activates unique public exhibition spaces and curates a selection of documentaries that reflect multicultural perspectives, spark dialogue, and enhance cross-cultural appreciation. Ambulante focuses on supporting and promoting documentary film as a tool for social and cultural change. The mobile film series travels to areas with limited access to film to diversify and democratize documentary culture.
The outdoor screening seeks to engage youth of color where they can discover what is possible in their lives through the lives of others like them. The inspiring story should serve as a long-term foundation for policy makers to support programs and resources so there are future builders of Underwater Dreams.
