Bree Newsome Bass: We Must “Dig Deeper” To Uproot White Supremacy

“President Trump said Wednesday he will “not even consider” renaming U.S. Army bases named after Confederate military officers. There are 10 such bases — all of them in Southern states. He tweeted, “These Monumental and very Powerful Bases have become part of a Great American Heritage, and history of Winning, Victory, and Freedom.” Bree Newsome Bass, who drew international attention in 2015 when she scaled a flagpole on South Carolina State Capitol grounds and unhooked a Confederate flag, says statements like these demonstrate the degree to which white supremacy is “mainstream” in the United States. She warns that those who pursue the removal of Confederate, colonial, and white supremacists monuments must be wary of accepting “surface level” changes to systemic issues. “We have to dig deeper in really understanding what it means to uproot and root out white supremacist ideology as we go through this process of renaming things and changing symbols,” says Newsome Bass.”
