The University Art Museum of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Presents Call and Response, When We Say…You Say. Artists from the Slanguage Studio and art collective in Wilmington, CA. teamed up to present their work in an unusual way at the University Art Museum. Curated by Karla Diaz and Mario Ybarra, Jr., Call and Response (think call and response in a black church) features artworks by locally based and mostly Latinx artists that are matched or artistically respond to artwork from the University Art Museum’s permanent collection. As the museum press release describes it, “ …these pieces directly engage the collection artworks in conceptual dialogue.”

Call and Response, When We Say…You Say co-curators Diaz and Ybarra were invited by the former museum director to organize the show.

“…because she was starting to develop a program,” explains Ybarra, “where she wanted people of color, women of color to engage the museum here.”

The goal was to engage the museum’s permanent artwork collection and bridge it to the student population here; especially the large percentage of Latinx students at CSULB.

Karla Diaz and Mario Ybarra, Jr. sat down at the University Art Museum with PalacioMagazine.com to explain and describe Call and Response, When We Say…You Say. First, we began with an explanation of the Slanguage collective.

Both Karla Diaz and her husband Mario Ybarra, Jr. are also presenting in the show. Diaz first described the artwork that she will be responding to in this interview.

Ybarra was excited about the permanent collection artwork that is inspiring his response. Let’s just say it has something to do with the Nike Swish.
