“People Are Mad”: Striking Auto Workers Are Fed Up with General Motors
“Thousands of General Motors employees are entering their fourth week on strike, with workers demanding better pay, protections of healthcare benefits and a commitment from GM to keep jobs in the U.S. The collective action, now the longest auto worker strike in the last 50 years, came out of a shared frustration over GM’s outsourcing of jobs and bringing in record-high profits with no benefit to workers. Another major issue is the mistreatment of temporary employees and the lack of opportunities for people to come on as full-time workers, according to Steve Frisque, a union steward and former president of UAW Local 722. The strike has also been supported by people in other unions and is part of a broader resistance to rising wealth inequality. “People are mad and they’re willing to stay out as long as it takes,” Frisque told Democracy Now! “We believe in what we’re doing.”
