Shelbyrae Black Wants to Improve the Everyday Lives of Her Neighbors
Shelbyrae Black is a candidate for the vacant Long Beach City Council District 1 seat scheduled to be filled on November 5th. Ask Ms. Black why she is running in a crowded field and she’ll answer it’s because she wants to improve the everyday lives of her Long Beach neighbors. According to Black, it would only take making a few simple adjustments.
“I have noticed a number of things in the district that to me seem like they could be pretty easily remedied.”

According to her campaign, Shelbyrae Black’s priorities are “parking, helping with the homelessness crisis, and cleaning the streets of Long Beach.” Black has developed what she describes as “focused, actionable plans to improve the city and bring about real, positive change.” PalacioMagazine.com sat down with Ms. Black recently to discuss her priorities and her vision for the First District.
Vision Statement
“My husband and I are proud to call Long Beach home and have already seen it change so much in such a short time. Most of that change has been for the better but there is still so much to do.
I am running to be YOUR city council member because we need to address PARKING, homelessness, lack of trash cleanup, and TRANSPARENCY to ensure our tax dollars are spent on the residents of Long Beach. As your City Council member, I intend to:
- INCREASE PARKING: It isn’t right or fair to ticket residents for something the city knows is such a big problem. We need residential permit parking to ensure adequate parking for residents, all new buildings must have enough parking for their tenants, and to find new ways to create more spaces throughout the district.
- REDUCE HOMELESSNESS: We shouldn’t be afraid to take our kids to the park. The increasing number of homeless in Long Beach needs to be addressed immediately through affordable housing and increased addiction & mental health services.
- CLEAN UP LONG BEACH: We need more trash cans throughout the district, clean streets, alleys, and increased bike patrols for safety.
Let me be your voice in City Hall!”

More on Shelbyrae Black
“Black is a resident of District 1 and graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in Sociocultural Anthropology and Theatrical Performance. She is an artist, member of the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, Long Beach Public Library Foundation supporter, and a travel coordinator for musical tours.
Shelbyrae is running for City Council because she wants to improve the everyday lives of her Long Beach neighbors. This is the first political position Shelbyrae Black has sought. She felt compelled to run after watching the city fail again and again to address the reasonable requests of her and her neighbors.
Shelbyrae has a lifetime of experience working in restaurants and hotels, learning how best to serve, listen, and engage with those around her. She believes those skills have helped prepare her to be the voice of the residents of Long Beach. She will bring the same sense of urgency, problem-solving, and coalition-building to the City of Long Beach that she’s brought to every job and fight for the real changes people want to see.
Shelbyrae Black lives in the East Village Arts District with her husband, Peter F. Black and they are both proud to call Long Beach their home.”
