Oakland Police Need A Tank & AR-15s To Evict Four Black Mothers?
“In Oakland, California, where vacant homes outnumber unsheltered residents four to one, a movement is building to bring awareness to the corporations that stand to profit from California’s high levels of poverty and homelessness. Moms 4 Housing is a collective of unhoused and insecurely housed mothers on the front lines of this struggle. Since November, the mothers and their families have been living in a vacant house at 2928 Magnolia Street as an act of nonviolent civil disobedience, shedding light on the issue of institutional racism and the housing crisis. Last week, an Alameda County judge ruled in favor of Wedgewood Properties and ordered the mothers to vacate the house. On Tuesday, Oakland deputies arrived at carried out a pre-dawn militarized raid aimed at evicting a group of women. “They came in a way I’ve never seen in real life, let alone in a residential small community, for unarmed civilians,” said Carroll Fife, director of the Oakland office for the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE). “This is the most obscene use at taxpayer dollars that I have seen in a long time.”
