Michael Bloomberg Didn’t Just Inherit “Stop and Frisk” — He Greatly Expanded It
“As Michael Bloomberg gains prominence in the Democratic presidential race, critics say the billionaire is obscuring his checkered record as New York mayor. Under Bloomberg’s watch, the NYPD harassed millions of innocent people under the “stop and frisk” policy, whereby police could stop, question and frisk people who were not suspected of any wrongdoing. This policy overwhelmingly affected young black and brown men. Since entering the race, Bloomberg has apologized, but he maintains that he merely inherited the practice from his predecessor and that he lowered its use. Journalist and filmmaker Blake Zeff says that’s revisionist history from the politician. “Not only did Bloomberg continue it, but he expanded it to record levels,” Zeff says.”
