Call it Street Art, Urban Art or even Graffiti Art. Whatever you call it, there’s something BIG, COLORFUL, STRIKING that is filling the exterior walls of buildings around Long Beach. And the interior walls of the Long Beach Museum of Art. The Pow and Wow has arrived again in Pow! Wow! Long Beach 2016.

The week long (July 11-17) celebration of Street Art, culture and music got underway Tuesday at a kick-off event in the parking lot of the Varden Hotel in Downtown Long Beach. This is the second year for Pow! Wow! Long Beach. Inspired by Honolulu’s Pow! Wow! Hawaii, artists from around the world, the United States and even Long Beach are creating images that will inspire your imagination.

Street Art is Art!

Mayor Robert Garcia talked about the impact today of Pow! Wow! Long Beach. He admitted that ten-years ago, it would never have happened.

In The History of Street Art, author Bojan Marić traces the growth of Street Art, “….by the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, street art has evolved into complex interdisciplinary forms of artistic expression. From graffiti, stencils, prints and murals, through large-scale paintings and projects of artistic collaboration, to street installations, as well as performative and video art, it is very much safe to say that street art has found it’s way into the core of contemporary art.”

Pow! Wow! Founder Jasper Wong talked to PalacioMagazine.com about the evolution of the event from last year and the challenges.

The Importance of Street Art for Community

Four of the Pow! Wow! Murals are going up in the Second District. New Councilperson Jeannine Pearce is proud of that and its impact on the community.

The home bases of the the Pow! Wow! artists range from Spain to Long Beach. While Pow! Wow! Long Beach brings excitement of vibrant street art to the city for a week, it’s the other 51 weeks that pose challenges for Long Beach Artists. Arts Council for Long Beach Executive Director Griselda Suarez says that challenge can be met head on.
