“Lakota historian Nick Estes says new efforts to fight climate change are inextricably linked to indigenous-led movements like the Dakota Access Pipeline protests at Standing Rock.”

“In many ways, the United States, along with countries like Canada, drilled their way out of the Great Recession largely at the expense of indigenous lands,” he says. “When we think about things such as the Green New Deal … we have to remember the inspiration for that and really the frontline communities that inspired this work.”
