A Conversation with Stella Ursua
Radio Palacio: The Green Prize Festival

Stella Ursua, Founder, The Green Prize Festival
Stella Ursua is the founder of the Green Prize Festival scheduled for April 30, 2016. In celebration of Earth Day, Green Education Inc. presents the 3rd annual Green Prize Festival!
The Green Prize Festival is a one-day event highlighting urban farmers, green chefs, live entertainment, artists, green technology, environmental organizations as well as education through workshops, demonstrations and guest speakers.
It’s the third year for the the Green Prize Festival event where leaders in sustainability and environmental health in Long Beach are recognized. The free day long event, 11am-7pm, will be at Admiral Kidd Park, 2125 Santa Fe Ave (North of Pacific Coast Highway), Long Beach, CA 90810.
Ursua explains in the Radio Palacio Interview that the Festival has it roots in another event, the Green Prix Festival that was held in 2013 on Pine Avenue. That year, the event highlighted Green Art among other topics. With time, organizers added Urban Farming. Then came organizations representing the environment and environmental justice. Then, they wanted to recognize people who were doing great things for the environment.
The organizers have scheduled the event in Long Beach communities that would benefit greatly from the environmental themes. Last year, it was Caesar Chavez Park near Downtown. This year, it’s the West Side at Admiral Kidd Park.
Stella Ursua listed what festival attendees can expect when they arrive on April 30th. It includes more than 60 vendors and entrepreneurs representing Urban Farmer, Green artists, Nonprofits and Green transportation experts tabling and running workshops. There’s a speaker series with Green subject matter. And while there will be plenty of education that will go a long way toward creating a greener and sustainable city, there will also be fun. There will Children’s activities as well as entertainment from Local bands along with Roller Skating crews and, of course, there will be a beer garden.
And if all that wasn’t enticing enough, Ursua says there will be Food. There will be food trucks and nonprofit organizations that offer vegetarian options. There will be locally sourced, healthier products that contrast with the food deserts of the West Side.
Ursua says she and the planning committee are looking for volunteers to help on event day. According to Ursua, they’ll need 60-70 throughout the day. The nearby Cabrillo High School is expected to be involved. If you’re interested in joining the fun as a vendor or a volunteer or you want more information, you can visit the Green Prize Festival website at www.greenprizefestival.com or visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GreenPrizeFestival.
