The LBCC Board of Trustees: The Primary Election Candidates
Long Beach City College (LBCC) has a 5-member governing Board of Trustees. In the race for LBCC Board of Trustees, two of the five districts represented are in contention, Areas 2 and 4. (You can see a map of the Trustee Areas HERE).

Irma Archuleta
TRUSTEE AREA 2
Irma Archuleta was appointed by the LBCC Board of Trustees to complete the term for now Councilman Roberto Uranga. She represents Trustee Area 2 which includes parts of Central and West Long Beach. Irma Archuleta is the Area II Trustee and Vice-President of the Board of Trustees for Long Beach City College. As a Trustee, Ms. Archuleta is committed to making Long Beach City College accessible and affordable for all Long Beach students. The nationally recognized, highly successful Long Beach College Promise and the expansion from one to two semesters of free tuition program for any Long Beach student committed to the College Promise pathway are among the notable achievements during her tenure.
Trustee Archuleta’s 33-year career has resulted in a successful track record in higher education within both the California Community College and the California State University systems. Most recently Ms. Archuleta served as Vice President of Student Affairs at Evergreen Valley College in the City of San Jose. As Associate Director of University Outreach and School Relations at Cal State University, Long Beach, she worked closely with Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach City College, the City of Long Beach and the Long Beach community for 18 years. Ms. Archuleta also has extensive administrative experience in the California Community College system including Santa Ana, Rio Hondo and El Camino Community Colleges.
As a faculty member, Ms. Archuleta taught political science and ethnic studies at Cal State University, Long Beach and El Camino College.
Ms. Archuleta attended Compton College and California State University, Long Beach. She graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills with a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Studies with emphasis on Bilingual Education.
Ms. Archuleta, a 30-year resident of Long Beach and a 16 year resident of Wrigley, has deep ties in the Long Beach community. She and her husband, Michael Archuleta, have three children who were born and attended public school in Long Beach and three grandchildren who currently attend Long Beach public schools.

Vivian Williams Malauulu is a candidate for the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees – Area 2, located in West Long Beach. The general election will be on April 12, 2016. Her passion for education and community service have motivated her to run for our local community college board.
She is a career educator who has been teaching in public schools for almost 20 years within the Los Angeles Unified School District, as well as classes at Los Angeles Harbor College and California State University, Dominguez Hills. Vivian is currently a part-time Journalism Professor at Long Beach City College. She holds four K-14 teaching credentials, a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from California State University, Northridge and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Doug Otto
TRUSTEE AREA 4
Incumbent Doug Otto is the President of the LBCC Board of Trustees as he represents Area 4. The area encompasses a large swath of the city that begins in Central Long Beach and then cuts through East and Southeast Long Beach. Doug Otto is an attorney, community leader, former law professor, and lifelong resident of Long Beach. He has a distinguished track record of personal and professional accomplishments and community service.
Doug grew up in Long Beach, where he excelled in school. After a year at Long Beach City College, he earned a full scholarship to Stanford University, where he graduated with a B.A. degree in Human Communications. After college, Doug studied at Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University in New York City, where he jointly earned a Master’s Degree in Religion. He then worked and studied as a New York Urban Fellow in the John Lindsey Administration, where he learned up close how cities function and local governments work. Afterwards, he attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a law degree.
When Doug returned to Long Beach he made a commitment to himself to do everything he could to make this city a livable, thriving community.
Doug was elected to the LBCC Board of Trustees for Area 4 in 2004. Since then, he has focused his volunteer work on higher education which he calls the “civil rights issue f the 21st century.” He has served three terms as President of the LBCC Board of Trustees. He was elected to the statewide California Community College Trustees (CCCT) Board of Directors where he led an effort to champion student success as a statewide goal. He now serves as vice president and is in line to assume the presidency. He has also served two terms on the Community College League of California (CCLC) which represents both California trustees and community college presidents and CEOs. In 2010 he co-chaired the statewide Commission on the Future of Community Colleges which was the genesis of the state legislature’s Student Success Task Force.

Davina M. Keiser
Challenging Otto in the LBCC Board of Trustees Area 4 is Davina M. Keiser. A teacher with the Long Beach Unified School District, she’s a third generation Long Beach-born resident who has been active in both Teacher Union positions and in Republican politics.
