Emergency Doctor Explains Why the U.S. Was Not Prepared for A Pandemic
“As New York hospitals see a surge in COVID-19 cases, medical workers report growing shortages of protective gear. New York City emergency room doctor and global health expert Dr. Craig Spencer says in the years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government “has torn apart the preparedness architecture here in the U.S.” He says this decision has compromised the ability for communities across the country to properly test, diagnose and treat the most vulnerable among us. “Putting the right amount of funding into the organizations who are capable of picking up these disease threats and responding to them all over the world is the only way to protect people everywhere,” he says. Spencer is also a survivor of Ebola, which he contracted while fighting the outbreak in Guinea.”
