Dreamers: Aquí y Allá (Here and There) at CSULB Studio Theater
Dreamers: Aquí y Allá, directed by Andrea Caban and co-directed by Julie Granata-Hunicutt, represents the stories of 800,000 Dreamers whose way of life has been threatened by the cancellation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The performances are at the California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Studio Theater through February 25th.
Dreamers: Aquí y Allá has a special story to share.
According to the play’s producers, Dreamers: Aquí y Allá has a special story to share.
“The people at the heart of this play are Americans who have suddenly found themselves vulnerable to expulsion, job loss, and deportation. Their stories of struggle, hope, and resistance are brought to life with the actual words of the Dreamers themselves…”
The play is based on “reflection papers” written by the Dreamers upon returning to Mexico with The California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC). CMSC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to research, develop, promote, and establish policies and programs between California and the U.S. with Mexico and other nations in the Western Hemisphere. CSULB Theatre Arts students also conducted hundreds of hours of interviews.
One hundred and sixty Dreamers were offered the opportunity by the CMSC to return to Mexico and re-enter legally into the U.S. through California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad programs. The trips occurred from March 2014 to August 2017.
“Unfortunately, the program was eliminated on September 5, 2017, when the Trump administration announced the rescinding of DACA and cancellation of the Advance Parole provision that allowed the California-Mexico Studies Center to offer this life-changing experience.”
