Defining Identity: Being Non binary and Latinx-Elles
“The term elles (pronounced /ˈeʝes/) is a gender-neutral twist on the Spanish words ellas and ellos, which are the feminine and masculine ways to say “them.” The Spanish language is heavily gendered, and many Latinx cultures are built on firm religious values and strict gender roles. Elles explores the intersection of culture and identity within four individuals who identify as both nonbinary and Latinx.
I have so much gratitude for everyone who helped make Elles possible. Thanks to Doug Graffeo, Annie Segarra (Annie Elainey), and Heath V. Salazar for their stories. Thank you to Rachel Anne for help with cinematography and to Logan George with editing help. Special thanks to Stevie Boebi and Annie Elainey for help with the concept and direction of the project. Thank you to Buffer Festival 2018 for making Elles an official Buffer Festival Selection. Elles premiered at the LGBTQ+ screening at Buffer on 9/29/2018.
